He then moved to Leiden and met and impressed the medical doctor and botanist Johan Gronovius (1690-1760) . Gronovius and Isaac Lawson (? - 1747), a young Scots doctor, agreed to fund the printing of Linnaeus's first published work, the Systema Naturae of 1735 which classified the three kingdoms of nature and outlined the sexual system for the classification of plants. Gronovius was also instrumental in introducing Linnaeus to the wealthy but hypochondriac Anglo-Dutch financier and Director of the Dutch East India Company, George Clifford (1685-1760), owner of a magnificent garden at Hartecamp, suggesting that he employ Linnaeus as house physician and garden superintendent.
Linnaeus moved to Hartecamp in September with a salary of a thousand florins a year, free
board and lodging.

SUMMARY

Johan Frederik Gronovius has understood Linnaeus's message about Flora Lapponica and abandons his initial plan to have the work printed and proofread in Leiden, even though he predicts it will not be well produced in Amsterdam.

Despite an accident which happened to the forme of type a week ago, the second part of "Regnum vegetabile" has been well printed. The accident has forced the printer to postpone the printing of "Regnum animale" to the following day.

By July, Artedi was in Holland, and on the eighth of that month met Linnaeus in Leiden, where the latter was staying whilst his tabular Systema naturae (the first of many editions) was being printed with assistance from J. F. Gronovius. Artedi's intention had been to qualify for a degree in Holland before returning to Sweden but his financial situation was precarious, and he was presumably faced with the possibility of returning home immediately unless some patronage could be obtained. It was the latter possibility that arose. Linnaeus had already been unsuccessfully approached by Albertus Seba, a wealthy Dutchman, of German origin, to study the fishes and other animals in his cabinet, and he now introduced Artedi to Seba with this purpose in mind. Seba, a successful pharmacist and merchant, with a magnificent collection of natural specimens, and unnatural curiosities, had already published two folio volumes of his work, usually known as the Thesaurus (the first volume, published in 1734, dealt with plants, quadrupeds, and birds; the second, 1735, with reptiles). The purpose of Artedi's engagement was to study and write a succeeding volume or volumes concerning the fishes and other, mainly invertebrate animals. The third and fourth volumes were not published, in fact, until 1758 and 1765 respectively, long after Seba's death.

Gronovius has sent a copy of the tables of the Systema naturae which have already been printed to John Russell, Duke of Bedford, in England. Bedford has passed the tables to Richard Mead and William Cole, who have read them with delight. They will also be presented to Richard Richardson. Philip Miller has them now in his possession; he will show them to Hans Sloane and
pass on his opinion to Gronovius.

Gronovius is very pleased with Linnaeus's description of genera, which he considers indispensable for understanding the Systema naturae properly. Gronovius would like to send one or two sheets of the genera to England together with the Systema naturae. Furthermore, he has found a bookseller who is prepared to print the Genera plantarum according to Gronovius's
wishes, on condition that 130 subscribers can be found. As a result, Gronovius is trying hard to find enough subscribers. If necessary, however, he will have the work published at his own expense. In two days Gronovius will start making some changes to the Latin of the text. Having received some new lines to be inserted in the description of genera, Gronovius reminds Linnaeus
of the fact that numbers should be expressed in words and abbreviations of words should be avoided.

Gronovius understands Linnaeus's remark about Albert Seba's frogs perfectly.

Gronovius is delighted with the plants he has received from Virginia, most of which have already been glued onto sheets.
Some plants, however, seem to constitute new genera and have been left intact so as to give Linnaeus the opportunity of examining them. Gronovius will send George Clifford various duplicates, as well as some seeds.

Reading through the Systema naturae, Gronovius has selected some genera of plants. He wants to know whether they have been described, if so where, where Linnaeus has seen them, and in which region they grow.

In his discussion of monsters, Linnaeus has corrected Seba twice, and deservedly so. Yet Gronovius strongly advises his friend to delete these passages altogether. Seba is held in high esteem in England, among others by Sloane and Miller. It would therefore be unwise to antagonise him, especially since Gronovius has every hope that Linnaeus will be elected a fellow of the Royal Society as soon as he arrives in London.

Gronovius informs Linnaeus that a new decade of John Martyn's Historia plantarum rariorum is in the press and that Engelbert K„mpfer's Iter Orientale will also appear.

For some reason or other, Gronovius forgot to send this letter the day before. In a postscript he points out that he has included two copies of "Regnum vegetabile", one copy of which is intended for Clifford, the other for Linnaeus himself.

John Clayton probably arrived at Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1715 and rapidly rose in prominence. It was likely through his association with the naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749) the following year that Clayton became interested in botany, and Catesby most certainly was the reason why Clayton began to collect plants in 1734.
While others had collected in Virginia before him, most notably John Banister (1650-1692), it was Clayton who began to systematically sample everything. He sent his specimens to Catesby at Oxford, and Catesby sent them on to Gronovius in Leiden where Linnaeus examined them in detail in the mid 1730s.

The specimen on the left is Silene stellata (L.) Ait.f. The annotations, written by Gronovius, consist of the polynomial given the plant by Clayton and various other early authors. The names were added over the years, and last one being one Linnaeus proposed.

Description : this map covers the lower part of the chesapeake, up to the mouth of the patuxent river and from the atlantic to the beginning of the allegheny mountains. There are no place names or soundings. The map was used to illustrate the second edition of the first systematic study of the flora of america. The map was located at the end of jan frederick gronovius' book entitled flora virginica, exhibens plantas, quas... D.d. johannes claytonus... In virginia crescents observavit, collegit & obtulit j. Fred. Gronovio, cujus studio & opera descriptae & in ordinem sexualem systematicum redactae sistuntur. Lugduni batavorum, 1762. Gronovius, son of a physician, classical scholar and librarian of the university of leyden, became a botanist and corresponded with many other botanists, from which he drew in part the data for his publications. He compiled the flora virginica in 1739, when its first edition came out. John clayton, a native of fulham, england, came to virginia in 1705 and was clerk of gloucester county for many years. He traveled extensively in virginia, especially in the region between the james and the rappahannock rivers. He spent much of his time collecting virginia plants and discussing them with gronovius, linnaeus, kalm, callison and bertram. Because his specimens formed the basis of this work, it is sometimes said he should be credited with the book. However, the final identification of the specimens, the system of the book and the classification were all largely the work of gronovius. The map did not appear in the first edition in 1739. It is not known who actually drew the map. The map is keyed by the numbers on its face to a "explicato mappae geographicae virginiae" in volume 2 of the 1762 edition, which edition was edited by his son, laurens theodorus gronovius, who added new plants from cadwallader colden, john mitchell, pehr kalm and pehr osbeck. It is an important study of our flora and introduced many new species. Data is from hunt's catalogue of botanical books, clark's travels in the old south, a bibliography, and from arkway's catalogue xxiv. John Clayton (1694-1773) was one of the early collectors of plant
specimens in Virginia, where he was Clerk to the County Court of
Gloucester County from 1720 until his death 53 years later. Although he
published almost nothing himself, Clayton's specimens have
considerable nomenclatural importance as, having reached Europe and
the hands of J.F. Gronovius (1690-1762) by 1735, many of them were
studied by the Swedish biologist Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) and
were among the earliest North American specimens that he had seen.

"Clayton began sending to Gronovius large numbers of dried plant specimens for
identification as early as 1735, if not earlier. These plants, many of which were
unknown, could not have reached him at a more auspicious time. On August 30, 1735,
Gronovius wrote to his English friend, Dr. Richard Richardson: "You will remember that
at the time you arrived here in town, you met at Mr. Lawson's a gentleman from
Sweden, that went the same night to Amsterdam, where he is printing his
Bibliothecam Botanicum. His name is Carolus Linnaeus..."

Without Clayton's knowledge, Gronovius
prepared and published a Flora
Virginica (1739-1743), based on a
manuscript of Clayton's and his
specimens. When, in his monumental
Species Plantarum (1753), Linnaeus
introduced the consistent use of
binomial nomenclature, his knowledge
of North American species was based
heavily on Clayton's specimens, along
with those of his own student, Pehr
Kalm (1716-1779). Consequently, many
of Clayton's specimens are types of
Linnaean names.

Although Linnaeus obtained some
duplicates of Clayton's specimens, now
to be found in Linnaeus' own herbarium at the Linnean Society of
London, the specimens that Gronovius had studied were bought in 1794
by Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), the naturalist who travelled with
Captain Cook. They subsequently passed, with the rest of Banks'
collections, to the British Museum (Natural History) - now The Natural
History Museum, in London. Until recently, the specimens were
dispersed through the main collection. However, increasing interest in
Clayton's plants recently led to the specimens being extracted and
curated as a separate collection so that they could be studied more
easily.

As potential type specimens for Linnaean names, they are of interest to
the Linnaean Plant Name Typification Project, based at this Museum,
and have also been a major focus for studies of the early botanical
exploration of North America, notably by Prof. James Reveal (University
of Maryland). In 1993, thirty of Clayton's sheets formed part of an
exhibition organised by Dr Norlyn Bodkin at James Madison University in
Harrisonburg, Virginia, generating considerable interest. This display
subsequently travelled to Colonial Williamsburg and the Chicago Field
Museum.

As historically important collections, they are not normally available for
loan but the interest in them has encouraged us to make images of them
available as a pilot project for herbarium specimens from The Natural
History Museum's collections.
